On the surface, it might not seem to matter. After all, cold or hot
water is just water. Right? Think and see if the following make sense
to you.

When I was a kid, I thought that cold water was better for me
because it helped cool me down right away, especially when the
weather was hot. Although my Dad and Mom often deterred me from
drinking ice-cold water or eating ice cream, I continued to drink ice-
cold water and eat ice cream as much as I could when my parents
were not with me.

For years, I would not listen to their advice until I took up martial arts
and got bruises, bumps, and sprains. After visiting several Chinese
Physicians for different injuries, they all said the same thing, “Avoid
ice or cold water and ice cream too!” “Why?” I asked. “Because ice
or cold water and ice cream, will slow down your blood circulation
and it will take longer for your injuries to heal. Worst of all, it will
cause ‘Rheumatism’ when you get older.”

What is rheumatism? Rheumatism comes in different forms. The kind
of rheumatism that my Chinese Physicians talked about is similar to
arthritis, with joint pains or other sharp pains coming back from old
injuries or overuse. How?

It could potentially turn you into an automatic weather forecasting
machine. For example, if you are suffering from minor rheumatism,
you will be able to tell when a storm is coming a couple of hours
prior to the storm because your past injuries will start giving you pain.

Most people, in general, will treat their symptoms as if they have
arthritis.  They will take pain-relief pills to ease their symptoms while
they continue to drink their favorite ice water, soda with ice, or eat
ice cream routinely.  They will wonder why their arthritis is going
from bad to worse!

As for severe rheumatic sufferers, their natural forecasting system is
far more accurate. They can feel the acute rheumatic pains
(especially if they have previous broken bone injuries) many hours
before the storm or rain arrives.
Ouch!

Fortunately, as dumb as I was for not listening to my Dad and Mom’s
advice (just because they were not physicians), I did listen to the
Chinese physicians and I finally stopped wondering why my parents
wanted me to avoid drinking too much ice or cold water – ice cream
included. My parents simply did not want me to suffer in the future.

Years later, I found out why Dad was more firm than Mom about not
wanting me to drink ice or cold water and eat too much ice cream. It
was because my Dad actually got it from experience. He was in
martial arts too and he had dealt with rheumatism before.

As with my other recommendations, you do not have to totally cut out
your ice water or ice cream. Just minimize it, if possible.

If the above is not convincing enough, think of the following:

Imagine your body as a car engine. Why is it best for you to warm it
up before you drive it, especially during SUB ZERO winters?
Circulation! You need to heat up your car engine in order to prolong
the life of your engine and prevent it from breaking down too soon.

Similarly, your body temperature is always heated up at +/-37° C or
+/- 98.6 °F when you are feeling well. Drinking ice-cold water or
eating ice cream regularly is like pouring gallons of ice water on top
of a heated car engine. It will lower your engine’s temperature or
slow it down suddenly; and your engine is your blood circulation.

Day in and day out, if you do this to your car engine, it will break
down prematurely. The breaking down of the engine is like
rheumatism in humans.

If you are not worried about rheumatism, drink ice water, ice-cold
soda, and eat ice cream, just like you did before. However, if you
would like to minimize your chance of getting rheumatism, cut it
down.

By far, I have not come across any Star Rheumatism Club Member
who thinks that having rheumatism is a fun and pleasurable process.
Sometimes the pain also hits a Rheumatic Member during their sleep
too, just because storms are coming.
Ouch! Ouch! Double Ouch!
